Sillery Gaon, called by the locals as New Darjeeling, a small village surrounded on all sides by tall pine trees, at a height of about 6000 ft in the Darjeeling district. Located at a distance of around 8 km from Pedong this village offers a magnificent view of the Kanchendzonga.
The name “Sillery” is derived from the name of a plant that grows in abundance in the region. This area also abounds in Cinchona Plantation which was introduced in this region by the British, as a source of Quinine used for the treatment of Malaria. The village offers a nice view of the Kanchendzonga.
Another amazing site near Sillery Gaon is Ramitey Dara, a famous vantage point, which offers a panoramic view of the winding River Teesta, with around 14 turns along the legendary Himalayas. A visit to the Damsang Fort, located 4 km away from Sillery Gaon is also worth a visit. The fort was constructed in 1690 by the Lepchas. However, only the ruins of the fort exist now, since it was destroyed by the British, post Anglo-Bhutan War of 1864.
